Profile
Chiang Miao-chin was a lesbian writer whose works offer stark, realistic portrayals of love and desire between women, while illuminating the psychological struggles faced by lesbians within a patriarchal social structure. Her writing powerfully expresses the conditions of survival and the identity crises experienced by queer individuals in contemporary society.
In particular, in her classic and representative novel Notes of a Crocodile, the protagonist adopts the first-person name “Lazi” (a colloquial term for lesbian), voicing dissatisfaction and despair toward patriarchal systems, as well as the various sexual and emotional obstacles imposed by traditional constraints. The work resonated deeply within the lesbian community, and “Lazi” subsequently became a widely used self-referential term among lesbians in Taiwan.
The divination poem mentioned here references three of her full-length works: The Diaries of Chiang Miao-chin, Notes of a Crocodile, and Last Words from Montmartre. She also authored the short story collection A Carnival for Ghosts.
